Shatterstar
Wildways is a dimension
located outside of the current 616-Marvel Universe.
There, a species known as the Spineless Ones resided and
were slowly driven insane for many years by television
energy transmissions. Since the transmissions were
somehow sent from Earth, the objects of these nightmares
took the form of Earth humans (as the characters from
the shows were what appeared in their dreams). These
forms began what is known as Wildways mythology, and the
shape and appearance of humans were cast off as the most
evil of all symbols (like monsters, or boogeymen).
The Spineless Ones were a very lazy and slowly
progressing race. One being in particular, named Arize,
wanted to see something better come of his people. He
was an inventor and a scientist, and for his whole life
he spent his time finding ways to put his skills and
talents to use. He started off making toys, little
animals, and other gadgets. He was a kind hearted man
who only wanted what was best for his people, but his
creations only ended up getting him into trouble. His
greatest accomplishment was an exoskeleton type device
-- an artificial spine -- for his people to use. With it
they could walk and stand and do amazing things all on
their own. They could progress at a higher rate and
evolve their society. At first they refused to believe
such an accomplishment possible. So to prove it, Arize
created his first batch of humanoid creations. Beings
that walked upright, spoke, and moved just like humans.
Most of the Wildways residents were very happy to use
the new exoskeletons, as they would no longer have to
drag themselves through the mud. However, there was one
small group of Spineless Ones that chose not to use
artificial limbs. They were radical and rebellious, and
this group would be the ones to eventually win power
over the planet. They became the leaders.
And because these rulers were still Spineless, there was
still much they could not do. It was decided that the
'ugly' humanoids that Arize created would make the
perfect slaves. They were only inventions that had
succeeded in making the Spineless Ones look bad. They
were slightly put off at the appearance of them (due to
the folklore), but their insanity and cruelty won over,
and they looked past it. Arize was absolutely devastated
at what had happened. He created an entire species that
would only be neglected, abused, and used. His loyalty
to the Spineless Ones was not strong, and he decided to
make one fail safe. All of his genetically engineered
creations would be enhanced with two hearts, healing
abilities, enhanced strength, speed, and agility. One
slave in particular was even given an extraordinary
ability, so that one day he would have the the will to
stand up and rebel. This 'Lucky One' was the humanoid
called Longshot, who would eventually travel to Earth
and join the X-Men.
It was somewhere around this time that Arize travelled
back in time and went to Earth. It was there that he he
began the next part of his plans. He set up a series of
communications and satellite devices in a tucked away
cabin. With these, he picked up television broadcasts of
people all over the Earth. These broadcasts were
transferred into energy transmissions and projected back
to Wildways. Arize hoped that the bipeds, his creations,
and his Spineless supporters would see them. From the
broadcasts they would see that life did not have to
revolve around madness and slavery. They could break
free and live a life any way that they desired. Arize
had passion and hope for his people, and he transferred
the images for many years until Spiral had caught him.
It may or may not have been completely known to him at
the time, but it was these transmission that had driven
the Spineless Ones crazy all along. The transmissions
were feeding them, and during Arize's stay on Earth, the
rulers had only gotten worse.
The Spineless ones became more and more insane and
eventually obsessed with the television airwaves. The
idea of television -- to them -- was of the up most
importance, and eventually the planet became governed by
way of 'Mediacracy'. This meant that the being with the
best show, the top ratings, and the highest profit was
deemed the ruler of the land. By a landslide, this ruler
was the megalomaniac known as Mojo -- and it was he who
had renamed Wildways after himself -- Mojoworld.
Under his rule, the humanoid slaves (also known as the
bipeds) became the actors in his shows. They performed
dangerous and real life stunts to entertain the masses
and keep up Mojo's ratings. The shows were explosive and
violent, and had regularly cost the slaves their lives.
These were the slaves of Longshot's generation. After
the future X-Man's close friend, Jackson, had died as a
result of a production, Longshot finally rebelled and
escaped his life as a slave (with some helpful advice
from Arize himself). It was this incident that began the
Wildways Rebellion army, and they would fight many
bloody battles in an effort to take down Mojo once and
for all.
As the rebellions grew and the wars became more violent,
the Spineless Ones grew angrier. And it was finally Mojo
V who upped the stakes of his TV shows, and instead of
having his slaves perform dangerous stunts, he began to
pit them against each other in gladiator style fights.
They were born and bred from select genetic material and
taught from very young ages to fight. They would live in
cells and befriend no one, and when the time came for
them to enter the arenas, they would kill or be killed.
The violence and degradation of the slaves was huge with
the viewer masses, and the rebellion grew in more risky
opposition to free their race.
Shatterstar was one of the gladiator stock. Born
approximately 80 years in Longshot's future, he
grew up to fight and kill, and would know nothing else
until he tasted freedom.
Putting the Benjamin Russell origin aside, little is
known about Shatterstar’s life before coming to
Earth. However, according to him, he was one of the many
biped creations. Yet 'Star was once a child and was
taught and trained everything he knew during his early
years. This included auto mechanics, technological
repair and maintenance (computers, etc), and his
swordsmanship. All of this was done in preparation for
his adult life -- everything he was ever destined to do
-- and that was entertain.
He described his early years as lonely miserable ones.
Shatterstar explained that he was considered one of the
weak as a child, and for a very long time his teachers
never expected him to make it through their classes, let
alone the arenas. An underdog from the get go, his sheer
will and determination led him through the many fights
he was forced to partake in, coming out a champion.
He was once described by Mojo as one of his top rated
performers and his most expensive piece of property.
Shatterstar excelled in the arenas, as he concentrated
less on ‘social amenities’ and more on survival. While
he basked in the attention he got from his fans, he was
unhappy that he was forced to kill others and
eventually decided to escape the slave pens.
After his escape, he described his life as being very
secretive. He lived off of the land and ‘amongst the
shadows’ for two years before he was accepted into the
ranks of the Cadre Alliance (the official name of the
Wildways Rebellion). Because of this, he is very capable
and knowledgeable of both survival techniques and
stealth operatives.
During his time with the Cadre Alliance, he fought
against Mojo and his Imperial Protectorate almost
constantly. This was probably the most violent
time of his life, as the warfare between the Spineless
Ones and the Alliance was very heavily armed and blood
thirsty. The Spineless ones and the Protectorate fought
for control over their world, while the Alliance fought
for the biped freedom. The war began 100 years before
Shatterstar’s time while Longshot was leading the group.
After nearly a century of battle, the Alliance began to
slip and their numbers dwindled. It was then that they
sent their 'martyr' elsewhere for assistance -- as a
last resort for their people's survival.
