Shatterstar
Other Origin Notes:
Prophecy:
The Wildways future was revealed by
Spiral in X-Factor Annual 7 (1992). In this, the time dancer
had parted ways with Freedom Force and was still walking the
Earth in search of Arize. She claimed that she was visiting
his past from the future (which was her respectful
timeline). When he demanded her reasons for wanting to kill
him, she had this to say:
Spiral: “How do you explain tragedy?
You can only recount the agony of one’s past—or future—not
explain it! I was a dreamer who found herself a walking
nightmare! I was a human who ate life with an appetite for
adventure who is now content digesting death! My name—so
long ago – was Ricochet Rita. I fell in love with a fellow
dreamer from another world named Longshot. And it was only
then that I learned that Longshot was known as the Fallen
Messiah. A man destined to fail again and again – a
perpetual rerun of futility!
It was then that Mojo decided to toy with me. He opened my
mind to the time between time – the space between space –
and he showed me how to dance between them all. Then he
coerced Arize to physically transform me; through
biocyberonic implants I became as twisted in body as I was
of mind! Then Mojo perpetrated perhaps the cruellest jest of
all – he programmed me to timedance backwards – to try to
stop Longshot from ever fleeing back to Earth, to capture
Rita, to help Mojo open her mind to insanity just so she
could escape to join Longshot on his doomed quest. Mojo
turned me into a tormented timeloop – a stained glass
fractured version of Longshot himself! Destined to
perpetuate my own downfall again and again...”
Arize: “Yes, I see. Because not only will I be forced to
experiment on you in my near future, but I am also
responsible for the creation of the biped race – whose
slavery Longshot has struggled to abolish.”
Spiral: “And a struggle which will not end for a hundred
years – and not even then! Until the male child of a human
and Arize-spawn leads the way!”
Arize: “Dance us home, Spiral – back to Mojoworld – to
ensure the Fallen Messiah does not fail again!”
Spiral: “Yes! We will go, toymaker – we will try to break
the cycle of pain and anguish! Let us dance with the devils
of death and the angels of hope! Come, toymaker, we fail or
succeed – for the first time in either of our lives by
conscious acts of our own free will!”
Arize: “In the future – the offspring saviour of Mojoworld –
what is his name?”
Spiral: “His name will be Shatterstar! But I only said he
would lead Mojoworld...I never said he would be its
saviour.”
While the prophecy itself had only panned out in an
alternate future, this was indeed the exact destiny Mojo had
referenced in the confusing origin story of Shatterstar a
few years later in X-Force (#59-61). So while Loeb’s story
in X-Force did have a few loose ends in it, most of it was
tied into this. Spiral made it clear that Shatterstar was
the child of a human and a Mojoworld biped – and it is most
likely that Shatterstar is not even aware of this at all.
And while many can be quick to discredit Spiral for being a
liar and someone who plays games and riddles, she had no
reason to lie in this situation. She was after Arize for
herself, and her anger was real and pure (which, again, ties
into even Longshot’s origin and why Spiral was always so
bitter and hateful towards him). This very prophecy and
revelation could, in fact, be a hint toward Spiral’s
connection to Shatterstar and Benjamin Russell. What it is
exactly is not confirmed, but it is apparent she played a
role in fighting for Shatterstar to fulfill his destiny
(which would explain why she helped X-Force in issue #61);
whether or not she did so for Shatty’s sake or to enact her
revenge on Mojo remains to be seen.
Parentage:
Since it was revealed that Shatterstar is half human, half
Arize spawn, he would have parents. The gestation chamber he
mentioned in X-Force #34 is the same device responsible for Longshot's creation. One would assume that Shatterstar was
raised thinking that he was bred the same way as the other
bipeds (for whatever reason), but the obvious fact that he
was a child at one point in his life should have given that
away. It's probably easiest to assume that he was taken as
an infant and raised and experimented on so that he could
just blend in with the rest of the livestock. Who his
parents are or where they were during his childhood is
unknown, but there are many hints and theories dropped
around the X-Universe:
~Longshot asking Dazzler to name their unborn child
Shatterstar.
~‘Star having the same DNA as Longshot.
~Shatterstar having four fingers like a human, rather than
three like the other bipeds.
~Shatterstar also once claimed that people on his home world
(of his generation) did not have mutant powers, and that he
was a 'freak amongst freaks'. Him being half Earth human
(mutant?) could be another hint as to why he had developed
mutant powers, whereas others of his generation did not.
~Spiral had claimed that both Benjamin and ‘Star were tied
to her in ways closer than she dare admit. It could also be
possible that she mothered him.
~Both Ricochet Rita and Alison Blaire were two humans living
on Mojoworld for long periods of time, and both have
romantic connections to Longshot
~Mojo told Shatterstar that he has "no idea" what was done
to him as a child, so there is a good chance that his
parents did not either. This would indicate that his parents
would most likely be part of the rebellion.
Longshot seems to have the strongest case against him for
being a parent, but with all the memory wiping he’s had done
to him it would be near impossible for him to determine.
This is another mystery left up in the air, but the probably
the most popular theory includes Spiral taking
Dazzler's baby from in utero and traveling to the future to
raise it herself. Since Spiral has her 'body shop' (where
the mind merging/swapping of Psylocke and Kwannon took
place), this is entirely possible.
Cadre Language:
Is completely made up. It is a language used by the
Rebellion forces on Mojoworld (as the Spineless ones and
slaves were all English speakers.) Some of the sayings
Shatterstar has used are:
~‘Za’s Vid’ - exclamation possibly meaning ‘Holy
Shit!’ or ‘Oh my God!’
~‘Fekt’ - a curse word, like ‘fuck’
~‘Foojkies’ - balls, ‘nads, testicles
~‘Codlista’ - affirmation
~'Uemuer' - refers to the soul or life force.
~'Fathakta Veja' - used when describing bravery;
gutsy; possibly fearlessness
~'Vehjka' - Unknown. Context used: "...you know of
Cannonball's origins, vehjka? So perhaps you'd care to tell
us more..." This could be an insult or a sort of
affirmation.
~Time is told in 'marks', rather than on a face clock
(for example mark 32 is equivalent to 12:00. This is also
how they do battle positions in the Cadre Rebellion).
~Units of length measurement are 'Gridlev'. Example,
'Star described 'gridlev eight' as being around the height
of a very tall tree.
~Arize’s name is used in much the same way humans would use
the Lord’s, for example (usually in vain).
~The word ‘Za’ (as mentioned above) has also been
used in a similar way to Arize’s.
